Notes from a self-hoster with too many tiny servers.

A VPN exit node for about 30 cents a month

I like small, cheap, boring servers. Lately I have been trying hourly-billed VPS hosting, where server resources are billed by the hour.

My current one is a tiny Debian 13 box in Amsterdam that I use as a Tailscale exit node. It has 384 MB of RAM and costs me roughly 0.30 tokens a month on TierHive. I topped up 3 USD for 3 tokens, so one top-up goes a very long way.

It is a NAT-based host, so check the port situation before you plan anything that needs public UDP or DNS.

Checkout TierHive for your Hourly VPS Referral link. TierHive may award me hosting credit for keeping this link on this page. This is not the official TierHive site.
